When is tarpon season in Islamorada?

April to July is best, Bud N’ Mary’s says, with April and May the traditional peak, some fish from February and resident tarpon all year. Robbie’s calls them most active from March to September. Tarpon are catch and release only in Florida, and a tarpon over 40 inches must stay in the water.

FWC puts tarpon at up to eight feet and 300 pounds, slow-growing and maturing at seven to 13 years, and says they gulp air at the surface; FWC research says they can live more than 50 years. A 100-pound tarpon is typically 13 to 16 years old, the Florida Museum says. FWC calls their food value poor: the fishery is almost entirely catch and release.
