How do you avoid seasickness on an Islamorada charter?
Book the backcountry or the reef rather than offshore, take any motion-sickness medication before you board, sleep well and skip alcohol the night before. On the boat, watch the horizon, stay at the back and outside, and keep fishing. The CDC says the medicines work best taken before the motion starts.
Pick the water first
The trip decides more than anything you pack. Islamorada sells three different days: the backcountry, in the shallow bay behind the islands; the reef, about four miles out; and offshore, past the reef to the humps and the Gulf Stream. The further out, the bigger the sea. Shake N Bait and A Fishing Guru both put motion-sickness medicine on their what-to-bring lists.
What works, according to the CDC
- A horizon to look at. A fixed horizon calms the clash between what your eyes and your balance report.
- The least-moving spot. On a boat that is the back, out on deck, not the bow.
- Moving with the boat. Loose knees and riding the motion help.
- Head still, eyes off screens. Reading and scrolling make it worse.
- Fresh air and slow breathing. Controlled breathing reduced symptoms in laboratory trials.
- Medication before you start. The drugs work best before exposure, not after symptoms begin.
What to avoid
- Alcohol and smoking, which the CDC says increase motion sickness, the night before as well as aboard.
- A short night. Lack of sleep makes it worse, and offshore boats leave early.
- Non-drowsy antihistamines. The newer allergy tablets are designed not to reach the brain and do not work for motion sickness.
- Relying on bands or ginger. The CDC rates the evidence for both as weak.
Children
The CDC notes that children under two rarely get motion sickness and that it peaks between seven and twelve. For a young child prone to it, a short trip makes sense: I’m Bit and Snap ’Em Up sell two-hour trips. Kids on a charter covers ages and trip choice.

Seasickness: questions
Which Islamorada fishing trip is least likely to cause seasickness?
A backcountry trip in Florida Bay, which stays in shallow water behind the islands. A half-day reef trip is the middle ground; offshore trips run furthest into open water and ride the biggest seas.
When should you take seasickness medication before a charter?
Before you board. The CDC says motion-sickness medicines work best taken before the motion starts, not after you feel ill. Ask a pharmacist which one suits you, and bring your own.
Do motion sickness bands work?
The CDC rates the evidence for acupressure bands, and for ginger, as weak. A horizon view, the back of the boat, fresh air and medication taken beforehand are the measures it supports.
