Florida Bay and Everglades Fishing from Islamorada

The backcountry on Islamorada’s bay side is mostly Everglades National Park: shallow grass flats and mangrove islands where snook, redfish and tarpon live, under the park’s own rules.

Can you fish the Everglades from Islamorada?

Yes. Park waters begin a few miles north of Islamorada by boat, and the Keys tourism council calls Islamorada the closest place to book an Everglades trip. Inside the park a Florida saltwater licence is required under FWC’s rules, the limit is 20 fish a person, and every boat operator must hold the park’s free boater education certificate.

What the Florida Bay backcountry is

The Islamorada Chamber of Commerce describes backcountry fishing in Florida Bay among mangrove islands and seagrass flats, for bonefish, permit, redfish, tarpon and trout. Bud N’ Mary’s, the Islamorada marina, says Everglades National Park waters begin a few miles north of the marina by water, and that much of the mainland backcountry is a run of 20 miles or more.

This is the fishing that separates Islamorada from Key West. Snook and redfish are core Islamorada backcountry targets and barely feature on a Key West calendar. The Keys tourism council’s fishing calendar grades snook Good from January to March and Peak from April to December, and red drum Peak from January to March and October to December.

The park’s rules for anglers

The park also reminds anglers that Atlantic and Gulf state seasons differ, and it carries a mercury advisory for some northern Florida Bay species: spotted seatrout, gafftopsail catfish, bluefish, crevalle jack and ladyfish.

National Park Service, Everglades National Park fishing and boating pages, read 6 October 2026. The park’s pages are the final word.

What a guided trip takes care of

Anyone running a commercial trip in the park, a fishing guide included, needs a Commercial Use Authorization from the park, valid for up to a year. On a guided trip the boat, the route through the pole/troll zones and the boater certificate are the captain’s job. Ask when you book how your licence is covered inside the park and whether the park pass is included. The National Park Service says a Florida saltwater licence is required to fish in the park and that its licence rules follow FWC’s, and FWC exempts customers of a licensed charter: do you need a fishing license explains the exemption.

When to fish the backcountry

Bud N’ Mary’s calls Everglades fishing good all year, with fall and winter a favourite for snook, redfish and tarpon behind bait pushes, and summer tarpon in the park excellent into September. A Fishing Guru lists snook among the most active inshore fish in every season. The Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Championship is fished only inside Everglades National Park boundaries, on 18–20 September in 2026. Best time to go has the full calendar.
